KING KHAN AND THE SHRINES

The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines (Vice): B+

Equal parts lounge lothario and service department rocker, Montreals King Khan gets the crowd jump with retro-tastic tales of lost love, fast surviving and the joys of overweight women. His eight-piece band, including horn section, blares psychedelic, 60s-inspired rock and soul somewhere between the Hives, Frank Zappa and James Brown. The sound is raw, industrious and fun, even when Khan is ironically poking fun at the syrupy sweet pop his band so deftly mimics.
